What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the master timing system of Vedic astrology — the tool that answers "when" in your chart. While the planets show what will happen, the Dasha shows when. The system divides life into a 120-year cycle ruled in turn by the nine planets, each governing a Mahadasha (main period) of a fixed length: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Your starting Dasha is decided by the Moon’s Nakshatra at birth. Each Mahadasha is further divided into Antardashas (sub-periods) of every planet, so at any moment two planets — the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords — are colouring your life together. A birth chart is a map of possibilities — but a map does not tell you when you will reach each place. That is what the Vimshottari Dasha does. It is the single most important timing tool in Vedic astrology, because it reveals which planet is holding the microphone at any point in your life.
