What is the Navamsa (D9) Chart?

The Navamsa, or D9 chart, is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology after your birth (Rashi) chart. It is created by dividing each sign into nine equal parts, and it reveals the inner strength of every planet, the deeper promise of your birth chart, and above all your marriage and married life. A planet that looks strong in the birth chart but weak in the Navamsa often cannot deliver its full results, while a planet that gains dignity in the D9 shows hidden strength. When a planet occupies the same sign in both charts it is called Vargottama, a powerful mark of stability. Astrologers always read the Navamsa alongside the birth chart to judge marriage, spouse, dharma and the true strength of the horoscope.

Why the Navamsa Is the Marriage Chart

The Navamsa (D9) divisional chart

In Vedic astrology, nothing is judged for marriage without the Navamsa. The birth chart shows the promise of marriage β€” whether it happens, and the broad picture β€” but the D9 shows its inner reality: the strength of the 7th house, the true condition of Venus and Jupiter, and the nature of the spouse. A 7th lord that is weak in the birth chart but strong in the Navamsa can still give a good marriage, and the reverse is also true. This is why experienced astrologers always open the D9 before saying anything about a person’s married life.

What the Navamsa Reveals

Marriage & spouse

The core purpose of the D9 β€” the nature and quality of married life.

Planet strength

Whether each planet is truly strong beneath the surface.

Dharma

Your deeper purpose and the second half of life.

Vargottama

Planets that keep their sign in D9, gaining stability.

Rashi Chart vs Navamsa Chart

Rashi (D1)

Your main birth chart β€” shows the overall promise of every area of life.

Navamsa (D9)

The 1/9 division β€” shows inner strength, marriage and dharma.

Read together

A planet strong in both is reliable; strong in one only is partial.

Vargottama

Same sign in both β€” a powerful, stabilising placement.

How to Read Your D9 Chart

A Vargottama planet keeping its sign in D9

Start with the Navamsa Lagna and its lord, which set the tone of the chart. Then look at the 7th house from the D9 Lagna and the planets in it for marriage. Check Venus (for men and general love) and Jupiter (for women and wisdom) for dignity in the D9. Note any Vargottama planets β€” they are dependable. Finally, compare each planet’s birth-chart sign with its Navamsa sign: planets that improve in the D9 have hidden strength, while those that weaken need support. Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Navamsa (D9) chart show?
The D9 shows the inner strength of your planets, the deeper promise of your birth chart, and especially your marriage, spouse and married life. It is the second most important chart after the Rashi.
How do I read my Navamsa chart for marriage?
Look at the 7th house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, and the Lagna of the D9. Strong, well-placed planets here indicate a happy, stable marriage. This calculator gives you the full D9 positions to start.
What is Vargottama in the Navamsa?
A planet is Vargottama when it occupies the same sign in both the birth chart and the Navamsa. This gives the planet extra strength and stability in its results.
Is the Navamsa more important than the birth chart?
They work together. The birth chart shows the promise; the Navamsa shows whether that promise has the inner strength to deliver, especially for marriage and dharma.
How is the D9 chart calculated?
Each of the twelve signs is divided into nine equal parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes. The part a planet falls into decides its Navamsa sign. We calculate this from each planet’s exact degree.
Do I need my exact birth time for the Navamsa?
Yes. The D9 changes quickly with time, so an accurate birth time is important for a correct Navamsa chart.
Can the Navamsa predict a good spouse?
The D9 gives strong indications about the nature of your spouse and married life, but a full marriage reading also uses the birth chart, Dasha and matching.
Is the Navamsa calculator free?
Yes. Your full D9 chart, planet positions and Vargottama flags are completely free.
