Disha shool - literally "the spike in a direction" - is the traditional rule that each weekday has one direction in which a journey should not be started. It comes from the muhurta texts and is still widely followed across north and west India before long journeys, business trips, moving house or taking up a new job in another city. The chart below gives the main direction, the vidisha (the corner direction) and the commonly used parihar, the small remedy taken before leaving if the journey cannot be moved.
| Day | Disha shool | Vidisha | Parihar before leaving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | East | South-East | Look in a mirror or drink milk |
| Tuesday | North | North-West | Eat a little jaggery (gud) |
| Wednesday | North | North-East | Eat coriander or sesame |
| Thursday | South | South-East | Eat a spoon of curd (dahi) |
| Friday | West | South-West | Eat barley or a little mustard |
| Saturday | East | North-East | Eat ginger or urad |
| Sunday | West | South-West | Take a little ghee or daliya |
An easy way to remember it: Monday and Saturday - east; Tuesday and Wednesday - north; Thursday - south; Friday and Sunday - west. The corner directions and the remedies vary a little between regional traditions; the ones here are the most widely used.
Chandra vaas is the direction in which the Moon "resides" on a given day, decided by the sign it is in. When the Moon is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius it resides in the east; in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn, in the south; in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, in the west; and in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, in the north. Because the Moon changes sign every two and a half days, chandra vaas changes several times a week.
The classical advice is to travel with the Moon in front of you (sammukh) or to your right, and to avoid journeys where the Moon is behind you. A favourable chandra vaas is considered strong enough to soften a disha shool, and many people check both together. The calculator works out the Moon's sign at your sunrise and shows chandra vaas for today and the next seven days alongside the weekday shool.
The compass in the result puts it all in one picture: the blocked direction in red, the corner direction in orange and the Moon's direction in green.
Life does not always allow a journey to be moved, and the tradition is practical about it. The most common disha shool remedy is to eat or do a small, specific thing before leaving the house: a sip of milk or a look in the mirror on Monday, a piece of jaggery on Tuesday, coriander or sesame on Wednesday, curd on Thursday, barley or mustard on Friday, ginger or urad on Saturday, and a little ghee on Sunday.
A second remedy is prasthan - symbolically starting the journey at an auspicious time the day before by placing a personal item (often clothes or a book) outside the house in the direction of travel, and then leaving from there. Others simply begin by walking a few steps in a favourable direction before turning towards the destination, or start during Abhijit muhurat, which is held to neutralise many travel doshas.
These remedies are about intention and calm before a journey. For anything important - a long trip, relocation, a first day at a new job - it also helps to avoid disha shool and pick a good choghadiya, which the linked calculators give for your city.
To decide which direction to avoid travel today, check three things in order. First the weekday disha shool: that direction is avoided for starting a journey. Second the chandra vaas: travelling towards the Moon is good, away from it is not. Third the time: avoid disha shool, and prefer a Char, Labh or Amrit choghadiya or Abhijit muhurat.
The rule applies to the start of a journey from home, not to every movement during the day. A daily commute, a return journey home, or a trip already begun are traditionally not affected. It matters most for long journeys, pilgrimages, business trips, and the day you leave for a new city or job.
The calculator gives all three for your city and any date - the shool and vidisha, the Moon's direction and sign, and links to today's disha shool and choghadiya - so the whole check takes a few seconds.
1. The weekday. The date you choose gives the weekday and, from the classical chart, the disha shool, the vidisha and the parihar.
2. The Moon. The Moon's sidereal sign at your city's sunrise is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris; its sign gives the chandra vaas.
3. The week ahead. The same is worked out for the next seven days, and the compass shows today's picture at a glance.
Monday belongs to the Moon, and the east is blocked, with the south-east as vidisha. Journeys westward, northward or southward are fine. If you must head east, the parihar is to look at your face in a mirror or take a sip of milk before stepping out. Good for travel to the west, and for starting a journey in the evening.
Tuesday is ruled by Mars; the north is blocked and the north-west is vidisha. East, west and south are open. The parihar before a northward journey is a small piece of jaggery. Tuesday is traditionally a strong day for short, decisive trips rather than long ones.
Wednesday, the day of Mercury, also blocks the north, with the north-east as vidisha. It is otherwise one of the best days for business travel and trade trips. Before going north, eat a little coriander seed or sesame.
Thursday is Jupiter's day; the south is blocked and the south-east is vidisha. East, west and north are open, and Thursday is well regarded for pilgrimages and study trips in those directions. The parihar for a southward journey is a spoon of curd.
Friday belongs to Venus; the west is blocked, with the south-west as vidisha. Friday is liked for family visits and trips for celebrations in other directions. Before going west, eat a little barley or mustard.
Saturday is Saturn's day; the east is blocked and the north-east is vidisha. Many people avoid starting long journeys on Saturday altogether; if you must go east, eat a little ginger or urad before leaving.
Sunday belongs to the Sun; the west is blocked and the south-west is vidisha. East, north and south are open. The parihar before a westward journey is a little ghee or daliya.
In the tradition each direction has a guardian, a dikpala: Indra in the east, Agni in the south-east, Yama in the south, Nirriti in the south-west, Varuna in the west, Vayu in the north-west, Kubera in the north and Ishana (Shiva) in the north-east. Vastu Shastra uses the same eight directions to plan a house, and muhurta uses them to time journeys - which is why disha shool, chandra vaas and Vastu speak the same language of directions.
The weekday disha shool can be read as the direction whose guardian is "not receiving" travellers that day, and the parihar as a small offering to set out with the right frame of mind. Chandra vaas adds the Moon, ruler of the mind, as a travel companion: moving towards it is moving with it. Whether you follow the tradition fully or simply use it as a pause to plan, the compass in the result puts all eight directions in one view.
Joining a new job in another city. This is the most common reason people check disha shool today. If the joining date cannot move, start the journey on a day when the city's direction is open, or do the parihar and leave in a good choghadiya. Some people send their luggage or a personal item a day earlier - a form of prasthan - and travel themselves on the joining day.
Moving house. The move itself is timed by griha pravesh muhurat for the new home, but the first trip carrying things there is often checked against disha shool. If the new home lies in the day's blocked direction, move a small symbolic item (a kalash, a lamp or a book) on a favourable day first.
Pilgrimage and long journeys. For a yatra, families check disha shool, chandra vaas and the Moon's tara bala together, and prefer to set out in Abhijit muhurat or a Char or Amrit choghadiya. The seven-day table in the result makes it easy to pick the best departure day of the week.
Short daily travel. Office commutes, school runs and returning home are not affected - the rule is about beginning a journey, not about ordinary movement.
