Pitra Dosh is read from three things together: the Sun, which is the karaka of the father; the 9th house and its lord, which carry the father, dharma and the ancestral line; and the nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Where these combine in specific ways, the tradition describes an unfinished matter on the family's side rather than a fault in the person.
The commonly quoted indicator is the Sun sitting with Rahu or Ketu. That is one of ten. The others - the Sun afflicted in the 9th, a node in the 9th, the Sun in a dusthana, the 9th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the Moon with a node, Jupiter with a node, Saturn in the 9th, the Sun with Saturn, and the 9th lord specifically in the 8th - are checked far less often, which is why two astrologers can give opposite answers on the same chart.
This calculator tests all ten, prints the exact position behind each one, and scores them by weight - because the Sun with a node is not the same weight as Saturn in the 9th, and pretending they are is how a mild reading becomes a frightening one. Then it checks the four softeners: a strong Jupiter clear of the nodes, an exalted Sun, a well-placed 9th lord, and nodes that stay away from the Sun and the 9th.
