For many families the day is organised around the Sun. Surya arghya - offering water to the rising Sun - is traditionally done within the first hour after sunrise, facing east, while the Sun is still low and gentle on the eyes. Surya namaskar is best done around sunrise on an empty stomach, and the classical sandhya vandan is timed to the two junctions of the day, dawn and dusk.
Because all of India keeps one clock, the same routine at "6 AM" means very different things in different cities. In Guwahati in June the Sun is already high by then; in Ahmedabad in December it has not risen yet. Planning by your own sunrise, rather than by the clock, keeps these practices in step with the sky wherever you live - which is exactly what the calculator is for.
The same holds for fasting days that end at sunrise or moonrise, for the time a lamp is lit at dusk, and for travel or outdoor work that needs daylight. The 30-day table gives the times ahead, so you can plan the week without checking every morning.
Indian Standard Time is set to the meridian at 82.5 degrees east, which passes near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. The country spans roughly 30 degrees of longitude, from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, and every degree moves sunrise by four minutes. So when clocks in Ahmedabad and Dibrugarh show the same time, the Sun in the north-east is almost two hours further along its path.
Latitude adds a second effect through the seasons. Cities in the north - Srinagar, Chandigarh, Delhi - have long summer days and short winter ones, while cities near the equator like Thiruvananthapuram have days close to twelve hours all year round. The table of major cities above shows both effects on today's date at a glance.
For astrology and panchang this matters more than it seems. Tithi, nakshatra and muhurat calculations that depend on sunrise - udaya tithi, rahu kaal, choghadiya, hora - all change with the city, which is why every timing tool on AstroMool starts from your own sunrise rather than a fixed Delhi time.
Sunrise is the moment the upper edge of the Sun appears on a flat horizon; sunset is the moment it disappears. Two small effects decide the exact minute. The atmosphere bends sunlight, so we see the Sun about half a degree before it is geometrically above the horizon. And we time the top edge, not the centre, which adds another quarter of a degree. Together that puts the Sun's centre about 0.83 degrees below the horizon at the official moment of sunrise and sunset - the standard used by almanacs and weather services.
The calculator follows the Sun through the whole day for your latitude and longitude with the Swiss Ephemeris and finds those two moments to the minute. That is why the times differ from one city to the next even inside the same time zone: all of India keeps one clock, Indian Standard Time, but the Sun rises in Kolkata more than an hour before it rises in Ahmedabad, and a city in Kashmir and a city in Kerala see very different day lengths in June and December.
Different websites can disagree by a minute or two because they use a different horizon correction, a different city centre, or a fixed table instead of computing the day itself. Hills, tall buildings and the sea horizon also change what you actually see. Treat the times as accurate to about a minute for a clear, flat horizon.
Light begins long before sunrise. Astronomical dawn is when the Sun is 18 degrees below the horizon and the faintest stars start to fade. Nautical dawn, at 12 degrees, is when the horizon line becomes visible at sea. Civil dawn, at 6 degrees, is when there is enough light to work outdoors without lamps. The same three stages run in reverse after sunset as civil, nautical and astronomical dusk.
Brahma muhurat is the period of about 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise - two muhurtas of 48 minutes each counted back from the Sun's rise. The tradition holds it as the best time for meditation, study and prayer, when the mind is fresh and the world is still. Because it is counted from your own sunrise, it moves with the seasons and differs between cities; the calculator gives it for the date and place you choose.
Sandhya is the junction of night and day. Pratah sandhya runs from the first clear light to sunrise; sayam sandhya from sunset until the sky darkens. These are the traditional times for sandhya vandan and evening lamps, and they are shown here from nautical dawn to sunrise and from sunset to nautical dusk. Godhuli muhurat - the dust-raising hour when cattle once returned home - is the short window around sunset still used for weddings in many regions.
The Earth's axis is tilted by about 23.4 degrees, so through the year the Sun's path climbs higher and sinks lower in the sky. In the northern hemisphere the longest day falls near 21 June and the shortest near 21 December. The farther a city is from the equator, the bigger the swing: in Srinagar the day is roughly 14 and a half hours long in June and under 10 hours in December, while in Chennai the difference is barely two hours.
A surprise hides in the data: the earliest sunrise and the latest sunset do not fall on the longest day, and the latest sunrise and earliest sunset do not fall on the shortest day. The reason is the equation of time - the Earth's orbit is an ellipse and its axis is tilted, so solar noon drifts by up to sixteen minutes across the year. Around the winter solstice, solar noon is moving later each day, so sunsets start getting later even before the days start getting longer. The year graph in the result marks all four dates for your city.
The 30-day chart shows the same movement close up: whether mornings are getting earlier or later, and by how many minutes, for the weeks ahead.
The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day on average, because it moves about 13 degrees along its orbit while the Earth turns once. Near purnima it rises around sunset and sets around sunrise; near amavasya it rises and sets with the Sun and cannot be seen. On some days the Moon does not rise at all, or does not set, within the calendar day - the result shows a dash when that happens.
How much of the Moon is lit follows the tithi: the angle between the Sun and the Moon grows by twelve degrees for each tithi, from a thin crescent after amavasya to a full disc at purnima. The result gives the lit percentage, whether the Moon is waxing (shukla paksha) or waning (krishna paksha), and the tithi at noon for the date you choose. Moonrise is computed from your city's position on the Earth's surface, since the Moon is close enough for that to shift the time by a few minutes.
1. Your place and date. Pick a city chip or type your own, and choose today, tomorrow or any date. The city is remembered for your next visit.
2. The sky, followed minute by minute. The Sun's and Moon's height above your horizon is traced through the day with the Swiss Ephemeris to find sunrise, sunset, the three twilights, moonrise and moonset.
3. Tradition on top. Brahma muhurat, the two sandhyas, abhijit and godhuli are counted from your own sunrise and sunset, and the next 30 days and the whole year are charted so you can plan ahead.
Golden hour is the time just after sunrise and just before sunset when the Sun is less than about six degrees above the horizon. Its light passes through more of the atmosphere, so it is warm, soft and low, and shadows are long - the light photographers, filmmakers and wedding shoots plan around. In India it usually lasts 25 to 40 minutes, longer in winter and in the north, shorter near the equator.
Blue hour is the deep-blue twilight when the Sun is roughly four to six degrees below the horizon - just before sunrise and just after sunset. City lights and the sky balance for a few minutes, which is why skyline and temple-lamp photographs are taken then. The result gives both windows, morning and evening, for your city and date, computed from the Sun's actual height rather than a rule of thumb.
For a planned shoot, check the date in advance and add a margin: hills, haze and tall buildings can cut the first and last minutes of low sun. On a clear day near the coast, the sea horizon gives the full golden hour; in a valley or a dense city you may lose ten minutes at either end.
The same windows are useful beyond the camera. Many people walk, run or practise yoga in the gentle light of the morning golden hour, and the evening blue hour is the traditional time for lighting the evening lamp - the moment day hands over to night.
This sunrise sunset time today answers the six questions people search most — sunrise time today, sunset time today, moonrise time today, brahma muhurat time today, suryoday ka samay — each with the rule behind it. The sunrise sunset time today above computes your own result free; the sections below explain what it means, and a sunrise sunset time today that shows its working is one you can check against any astrologer.
Sunrise and sunset time today in India differ from city to city. Sunrise and sunset time today in India is different for every city, even inside one time zone. The calculator takes your latitude and longitude, follows the Sun through the day with the Swiss Ephemeris, and gives the moment its upper edge rises and sets, corrected for the bending of light in the atmosphere. The result also shows solar noon and the length of the day and the night, so you can see at a glance how much daylight you have.
Sunrise time today is the moment the top of the Sun clears a flat horizon. Because the atmosphere lifts the image of the Sun by about half a degree, you see it a couple of minutes before it is geometrically above the horizon. For work that begins with the Sun - surya namaskar, arghya, the first light for a photograph - the civil dawn time just before it is shown in the twilight table.
Golden hour time today is listed in the twilight table - the half hour after sunrise and before sunset when the Sun is low and the light is warm. Sunset time today is the moment the last edge of the Sun disappears. After it, civil twilight still gives usable light for twenty to thirty minutes in India. Through the year, sunsets move later from December to early July; near the winter solstice they start getting later even while mornings are still getting darker, which the 30-day chart makes easy to see.
Moonrise time today depends on the tithi: near purnima the Moon rises around sunset, near amavasya around sunrise. It moves about 50 minutes later each day, and once a month it skips a calendar date altogether. The calculator gives moonrise and moonset for your city, the lit percentage of the Moon and whether it is waxing or waning.
Brahma muhurat time today is counted back from your own sunrise: it begins about 96 minutes before the Sun rises and ends about 48 minutes before. In summer that can be before 4:00 AM in north India; in winter after 5:30 AM. The twilight table lists it alongside pratah sandhya, so the whole early-morning sequence is in one place.
Suryoday ka samay har shehar me alag hota hai - poore Bharat me ek hi ghadi (IST) chalti hai, par purab me surya pashchim se ek ghante se zyada pehle ugta hai. Upar apna shehar chuniye: aaj ka suryoday, suryast, chandrodaya, brahma muhurat aur agle 30 din ka samay turant mil jayega.
If you came to this sunrise sunset time today to check a result from another app, compare the degree, not just the sign — two tools using different ayanamsas will disagree by about a sign near boundaries. This sunrise sunset time today prints Lahiri, the value used, and every intermediate step, so the sunrise sunset time today result can be verified line by line.
