Start with the thing that confuses almost everyone who comes from western astrology.
When someone in India asks your rashi, they mean your Moon sign. Not the Sun. If you answer with your western sun sign, you have answered a different question - and the two are usually different signs, because the Sun takes a month to cross a sign and the Moon takes two and a quarter days.
The word rashi simply means a zodiac sign, and strictly you can say Surya rashi for the Sun sign and Chandra rashi for the Moon sign. But in ordinary Indian usage, unqualified, rashi means Chandra rashi. That is what goes on a wedding biodata, what a pandit asks for, and what this page computes.
This is not a matter of preference. Three of the largest calculations in Vedic astrology are counted from the Moon, and none of them uses the Sun:
1. Your entire dasha sequence. The Vimshottari system divides a life into nine planetary periods totalling a hundred and twenty years, and the whole thing starts from your Moon's nakshatra. The nakshatra lord rules your first period, and how far into the nakshatra the Moon sat decides how much of that period was already spent when you were born. Change the Moon's position slightly and every date in your life's timing moves.
2. Kundali matching. The thirty-six guna system used across India for marriage is computed almost entirely from both people's Moon nakshatras and signs. The gana, the yoni, the nadi, the tara, the bhakoot - all Moon-based. The Sun barely appears in the calculation at all.
3. Sade Sati and the dhaiya. Saturn's seven-and-a-half year transit is counted as the 12th, 1st and 2nd from your Moon sign. The two dhaiya are the 4th and the 8th from it. Every one of those is measured from this single figure.
Add tarabala, which counts daily from your Moon's nakshatra, and it becomes difficult to name a more load-bearing number in a Vedic chart. The Moon is where the timing lives.
The classical reading is specific, and worth stating precisely because the popular version is looser.
The Moon is the karaka for the mind - manas. But manas is not intellect, which belongs to Mercury. It is the receiving, feeling, reactive part of a person: mood, emotional weather, what you take in and how you respond before you have thought about it. It is also read for the mother, for comfort and for the sense of being at home.
So "your rashi is your personality" is a rough translation of something more particular. It is closer to say the Moon describes how you experience things, while the lagna describes the body and the visible self, and the Sun describes standing and authority.
The Moon covers about thirteen degrees a day - faster than anything else in a chart - and crosses a sign in roughly two and a quarter days.
That means your date of birth settles your rashi most of the time. But roughly once every two and a quarter days the Moon changes sign, and if you were born on such a day, the time decides it. The change can fall at any hour.
This page checks for that and tells you if it applies to you, rather than quietly picking one. If it does apply and you do not know your birth time, at least you now know that your rashi is genuinely uncertain - which is better than being told a sign that might be the wrong one.
