Times are IST from the Swiss Ephemeris (sidereal, Lahiri) and refresh every day. Choose another year in the calculator for its full list.
Panchak - literally "the five" - is the period when the Moon passes through the last five nakshatras of the zodiac: the second half of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. In sign terms it begins when the Moon enters Aquarius (Kumbh) and ends when it leaves Pisces (Meen). Because the Moon covers this sixty-degree stretch in about four and a half days, panchak comes once a month and lasts four to five days.
Muhurta texts treat these five days as unsuitable for a short list of activities rather than for everything. The best-known restrictions are laying a roof, gathering wood or fuel, making a bed, travelling south, and performing a cremation without the special panchak shanti. Everyday work, office, study and most rituals carry on as usual.
The calculator gives every panchak of the year to the minute in Indian Standard Time, tells you whether today falls inside one, and names its type from the weekday it began on - which is how most families in north India decide how seriously to take it.
The tradition names each panchak after the day of the week on which it begins. A panchak starting on Sunday is Roga Panchak, linked to illness - many avoid starting treatment or elective surgery. One starting on Monday is Raja Panchak, the mildest, said even to favour government and property matters. Tuesday gives Agni Panchak, associated with fire; construction, machinery and fire-related work are avoided.
A panchak beginning on Friday is Chora Panchak, linked to theft and loss, so travel, lending and big purchases are postponed. The most feared is Mrityu Panchak, which begins on a Saturday: risky work, long journeys and new beginnings are avoided altogether. A panchak beginning on Wednesday or Thursday carries no special name and is treated as the least troublesome, though the five classical restrictions still apply.
The result colours each period by its type, so a quick look at the year's timeline shows which months have a Mrityu or Agni panchak worth planning around.
Classical muhurta works such as the Muhurta Chintamani list five things to avoid in panchak. Gathering wood, grass or fuel is avoided because it was believed to invite fire. Laying a roof or slab - chhat dalna - is the restriction most people know, and builders in many regions still plan the roof pour around it. Making or buying a bed or cot is avoided. Travelling south, the direction of Yama, is postponed where possible. And a cremation that falls in panchak is done with panchak shanti, in which five small figures of kusha grass are cremated with the body.
What is fine: daily work, office, business as usual, study, shopping for ordinary things, most pujas and festivals. Many families treat marriage, griha pravesh and vehicle purchase as a matter for the full muhurat rather than panchak alone, but prefer to avoid Mrityu and Agni panchak for them.
If something unavoidable falls in panchak - a roof pour that cannot wait, a journey south - the tradition offers remedies rather than fear: a simple puja, charity, or starting the work at an auspicious hour. The Shubh Muhurat calculator can find that hour for your chart.
The most solemn panchak rule concerns death. The Garuda Purana and later texts say that a death during panchak may be followed by others in the family unless a remedy is performed. The remedy, panchak shanti, is to make five small effigies of kusha grass or flour, perform their rites, and cremate them along with the body. Afterwards a shanti puja is often held.
This is a matter of family custom and faith; it is not a reason to delay urgent rites. Priests are familiar with the procedure and it adds little time to the cremation. The calculator's list lets families check quickly whether a date falls in panchak.
1. The Moon traced. The Moon's sidereal longitude is followed hour by hour with the Swiss Ephemeris; the exact moments it reaches 300 degrees (Aquarius) and 360 degrees (end of Pisces) give the start and end of every panchak, refined to the minute.
2. Type named. The weekday of each start in Indian Standard Time gives its type - Roga, Raja, Agni, Chora, Mrityu, or unnamed for Wednesday and Thursday.
3. Always current. Today's status, the next panchak and the year's list refresh every day, and you can choose any year to see its full list.
For most families today, the panchak rule that really changes plans is the roof. Builders and home-owners across north India avoid pouring the slab - chhat dalna - during panchak, and many also avoid starting the foundation, fixing the main door frame or installing the first beam. The simplest way to respect the rule is to look at the panchak dates list before fixing the pour date with the contractor, and to keep a buffer of a day on either side of the start and end times.
Because panchak comes once a month and lasts under five days, there are always three weeks of clear dates in between. Weather, labour and material usually decide the exact day; the panchak dates list simply tells you which few days to keep out. For a griha pravesh after construction, the Shubh Muhurat calculator checks tithi, nakshatra and your own chart together, which matters more than panchak alone.
The same thinking applies to buying wood or fuel in bulk, getting a new bed made, or planning a road trip that heads south. Following panchak rules - what not to do - is about moving a handful of tasks a few days, not stopping life. When the period is a Mrityu or Agni panchak, many families extend the caution to vehicles, machinery and big purchases as well.
Panchang has several "avoid" periods, and they are often confused. Rahu kaal is a daily window of about ninety minutes, different each weekday, used to avoid starting things. Bhadra (Vishti karana) is a half-tithi that recurs every few days and is avoided especially for Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan. Kharmas is the month when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces, when weddings and griha pravesh are traditionally not held. Panchak is the monthly five-nakshatra stretch with its own short list of restrictions.
Each works on a different scale - hours for rahu kaal, half-days for bhadra, days for panchak, a month for kharmas - and each affects different activities. An event can fall outside panchak and still be inside rahu kaal on that day, so for anything important it is worth checking all of them, which is exactly what a full muhurat does.
Among the types of panchak, the Mrityu panchak dates deserve the most attention in planning, followed by Agni panchak. Raja panchak is the mildest and many people simply note it and carry on. The colour timeline in the result makes these differences visible at a glance for the whole year.
