Every birth chart hides fifteen more charts inside it. A divisional chart - a varga - is made by dividing each sign of the zodiac into equal parts and mapping each part to a sign by a fixed rule. A planet at 17 degrees of Taurus sits in Taurus in the birth chart (D1), but in the navamsa (D9) it falls in a different sign, in the dasamsa (D10) another, and so on. Each varga is read for one area of life, like zooming into one room of a house.

The dasamsa is the chart most people look at after the navamsa, because it describes career and public life. Each sign is split into ten parts of three degrees; for odd signs the count starts from the sign itself, for even signs from the ninth sign from it. The result draws your D10 with its own lagna.

To read it, start with the D10 lagna and its lord, then the tenth house of the D10 and any planets there. Planets in their own or exalted signs in the D10 point to the kind of work where you shine: the Sun for government and leadership, Mercury for business, communication and analysis, Jupiter for teaching, law and advice, Venus for arts, design and luxury, Saturn for engineering, administration and long service, Mars for technical, defence and sports careers. The mahadasha of a planet strong in the D10 is often when career rises.

Because each dasamsa division is only three degrees, a birth time error of ten minutes can move the D10 lagna. If your time is approximate, give more weight to planet placements than to the D10 ascendant.

The shashtiamsa divides each sign into sixty parts of half a degree. Parashara gives it the highest weight of all the vargas, calling it the key to past-life karma. But because the ascendant moves through half a degree in about two minutes, the D60 lagna can change with every two minutes of birth time - which is why most astrologers read it only for charts with a verified birth time, or use it for birth-time rectification.

The result shows your D60 alongside the other charts. Treat it as the finest, most sensitive layer: if the D60 agrees with the D1 and D9, that area of life is strongly confirmed; if your time is uncertain, rely on D1, D9 and the planet-by-planet table instead.

A planet that occupies the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa is vargottama - literally "best in the division". It is held to give steady, reliable results, much like a planet in its own sign. Vargottama is most common for planets in the first navamsa of moveable signs, the fifth of fixed signs and the ninth of dual signs. The result names every vargottama planet in your chart.

The same idea extends across all sixteen charts. A planet that falls in its own or exalted sign in many vargas is strong in many areas of life; one that is weak in most vargas struggles to deliver even if it looks good in the D1. Classical astrology formalises this as Vimshopaka bala; the strength table in the result gives a simple version - how many of the sixteen vargas put each planet in its own or exalted sign.

1. The birth chart. Sidereal (Lahiri) positions of the nine planets and the ascendant are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris for your exact time and place.

2. Sixteen divisions. Each longitude is mapped into every varga with Parashara's rules - equal parts for most charts, starting signs by odd/even or moveable/fixed/dual, and the unequal planetary parts of the D30.

The navamsa divides each sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and it is the most widely read varga after the birth chart. It describes marriage and the spouse, and - just as important - the inner, lasting strength of every planet. A planet exalted in the D1 but debilitated in the D9 promises much and delivers less; a planet weak in the D1 but strong in the D9 improves with age.

Read the D9 lagna and its lord for the nature of married life, the seventh house of the D9 for the spouse, and Venus (for everyone) and Jupiter (traditionally for women) for the marriage itself. D2 hora - wealth. The hora has only two signs, Leo (the Sun's hora) and Cancer (the Moon's). Planets in the Sun's hora are read as earning through effort, authority and one's own name; planets in the Moon's hora as earning through people, trade and nurturing. D4 chaturthamsa - property and fortune. Read the D4 lagna, its fourth house and the positions of Mars (land), Venus (comforts and vehicles) and the Moon (home and peace). A strong D4 supports owning property and a settled home; afflictions here often show moves and delays in buying a house.

For each of these, the promise must be present in the D1 first - the varga fine-tunes when and how it arrives.

1. Check the D1 first. Look at the relevant house and its lord in the birth chart - the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career, the 4th for property. The varga can only refine what the D1 promises.

2. Find the varga lagna and its lord. In the chosen varga, note the ascendant sign and where its lord sits. A lord in its own, exalted or friendly sign, or in a kendra or trikona, supports that area of life.

3. Read the matching house in the varga. The seventh house of the D9, the tenth of the D10, the fourth of the D4, the fifth of the D7. Benefics there help; malefics ask for effort.
