Manglik Matching: Both Charts, Checked Properly

This is one of the most consequential findings in Indian matchmaking. It stops proposals. It is also checked more carelessly than almost anything else in the system.

So here is what a proper check actually involves.

Mars is counted from three references, not one

The classical method counts Mars's house from three points, not from the ascendant alone:

• From the ascendant - the standard reference for any chart.
• From the Moon - because the Moon is the second main reference throughout this tradition.
• From Venus - specifically for marriage questions, because Venus is the karaka for the spouse.

If Mars falls in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from a reference, that reference reads as Manglik. A finding holding from all three is much stronger than one holding from a single one - and a reading that counted only from the ascendant used a third of the method.

That means a proper matching check is six checks in all: three references, two charts. Most readings do one and announce a result.

Both charts, separately, then read together

Manglik matching means running that check twice - once for each person - and only then reading the results together.

A page that checks one chart and announces a matching verdict has not done the work. You cannot assess a pairing from one side of it.

The rule everybody quotes

"If both are Manglik, it cancels."

It is a real classical rule. It is also quoted far more often than it is verified, and it is one of six cancellations, not the only one. The classical list also includes:

• Mars in its own sign or exalted - in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn.
• Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter, and in some treatments Mercury or a well-placed Venus.
• Mars in the 1st for an Aries or Scorpio ascendant - its own sign, so the placement is not read the same way.
• A strongly placed Moon in a kendra - the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th.
• Several ascendant-specific exemptions, where Mars in a particular house for a particular rising sign is held not to apply.

We test all of them, for both charts, and print what does not apply alongside what does. Knowing what was ruled out is part of the answer - a page that only tells you what applied has shown you half a calculation.

The figure that changes everything

Roughly one person in four is Manglik by the common reckoning.

The arithmetic is not complicated. Six houses out of twelve is half. Counted from three references rather than one, the chance of qualifying from at least one reference rises considerably. By the ordinary reckoning used in practice, it lands around a quarter of everybody.

That is not a rare condition. It is a quarter of the population - hundreds of millions of people in India alone - and they are not all in difficult marriages. A finding that applies to a quarter of everybody is a starting point for a conversation, not grounds for refusing a proposal.

And after the cancellations are applied, the number falls further. The gap between "one in four" and "one in four, minus every chart where a cancellation applies" is where most of the alarm around this subject lives.

What this page will not do

It will not tell you a match is impossible.

No classical source gives anyone that authority, and this finding has done real harm in the hands of people who claimed it. Marriages have been called off, people have been told they are dangerous to a future spouse, and remedies have been sold at considerable prices to families who were frightened rather than informed.

What we give you is the computation - six checks, every cancellation, both charts, and the frequency. What you do with it is yours, and so is the decision.

Anshik Manglik, and degrees of it

You may have heard the term anshik Manglik - partial Manglik. It is used when the finding holds from one reference but not the others, or when a cancellation partly applies.

It is not a formal classical category so much as a practical shorthand, and different practitioners use it differently. What it points at is real though: the finding is not binary. Three references and six cancellations produce a range of outcomes, and collapsing that into yes-or-no loses most of the information.

What the texts describe are Tuesday observances for Mars - fasting, offerings, attention to the practices associated with the planet. These cost nothing and are offered as conduct rather than as transactions.

The Kumbh Vivah ceremony and similar rituals are widely sold at high prices. Whether a family finds them meaningful is their own matter. What is worth knowing is that no text sets a price for any of it, and that being quoted a large figure for a finding that applies to a quarter of everybody is worth pausing over.
