These are the exact astronomical moments. The purnima and amavasya vrat follow the tithi at sunrise - see the moon phase calendar in the result or the Hindu festival calendar for the vrat dates.
The Moon has no light of its own; we see the half lit by the Sun, from different angles as it circles the Earth. At new moon it sits between us and the Sun and its lit side faces away, so it is invisible. A thin waxing crescent appears in the western sky after sunset a day or two later. About a week after new moon the right half is lit - the first quarter - and the Moon then grows through waxing gibbous to full moon, when it rises at sunset and stays up all night.
After full moon the lit part shrinks: waning gibbous, the last quarter (left half lit, rising around midnight) and a thin waning crescent seen before dawn, before the next new moon. The whole cycle - a synodic month - takes about 29.5 days, which is why a lunar month is shorter than a calendar month and why festivals drift against the Gregorian calendar.
From India, the crescent Moon often looks like a boat, lying almost on its back, rather than the upright "C" shape seen in Europe. That is simply our latitude: closer to the equator, the Moon's path meets the horizon more steeply. The moon picture in the result is drawn to the exact phase for the date you choose.
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month: fifteen in the bright half (shukla paksha, from new moon to full moon) and fifteen in the dark half (krishna paksha, from full moon to new moon). The fifteenth of the bright half is purnima; the last of the dark half is amavasya.
Because the Moon's speed varies, a tithi can last anywhere from about nineteen to twenty-six hours, so it rarely lines up with a calendar day. Panchang names each day by the tithi prevailing at sunrise - the udaya tithi - which is why the result gives both the tithi now and the moment it ends. Occasionally a tithi begins and ends between two sunrises and is skipped; occasionally one covers two sunrises and repeats.
The month calendar in the result shows the tithi at sunrise for every day in your city, with purnima, amavasya and ekadashi marked - the days most families plan fasts and pujas around.
Most Hindu observances follow the Moon. Purnima, the full moon, is kept with fasting, Satyanarayan katha and holy baths; Guru Purnima, Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima are among the most important days of the year. Amavasya, the new moon, is the day for remembering ancestors with tarpan and charity, and Diwali itself falls on an amavasya. Ekadashi, the eleventh tithi of each half, is the most widely kept fast.
The Moon also rules the mind in Jyotish, and many people notice their sleep, mood or energy shift around the full and new moon. Whether or not you follow the tradition, knowing where the Moon is in its cycle is useful for planning a night photograph, a trek by moonlight, fishing, or simply for looking up at the sky at the right time.
1. The angle. The angle between the Moon and the Sun is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris for the moment you choose; it gives the phase, the lit percentage and the tithi.
2. Your city. Moonrise and moonset are traced for your latitude and longitude, and the month calendar uses the tithi at your own sunrise.
3. The cycle ahead. The exact moments of the next quarters, full moon and new moon, and every full and new moon of the year, are found to the minute in IST.
Every lunar month in the Hindu calendar ends (purnimanta) or peaks (amanta) with a purnima, and almost every purnima carries a festival. The table lists the classical name of each and what it is known for; the exact full moon dates for 2026 are in the table above and on the moon phase calendar 2026 in the result.
| Lunar month | Purnima | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Pausha (Dec-Jan) | Paush Purnima | Start of the Magh Mela bathing season at Prayagraj |
| Magha (Jan-Feb) | Magha Purnima | Holy bath, charity; end of Magh Mela |
| Phalguna (Feb-Mar) | Holika Dahan | Bonfire on purnima night, Holi the next day |
| Chaitra (Mar-Apr) | Hanuman Jayanti | Birth of Hanuman in most of north India |
| Vaishakha (Apr-May) | Buddha Purnima | Birth, enlightenment and nirvana of the Buddha |
| Jyeshtha (May-Jun) | Vat Purnima | Married women pray at the banyan tree (west India) |
| Ashadha (Jun-Jul) | Guru Purnima | Honouring teachers; Vyasa Purnima |
| Shravana (Jul-Aug) | Raksha Bandhan | Rakhi, and Narali Purnima on the coast |
| Bhadrapada (Aug-Sep) | Bhadrapada Purnima | Pitru Paksha begins the next day |
| Ashwin (Sep-Oct) | Sharad Purnima | Kheer under the moonlight; Kojagari Lakshmi puja |
| Kartika (Oct-Nov) | Kartik Purnima / Dev Deepawali | Lamps on the ghats, Guru Nanak Jayanti |
| Margashirsha (Nov-Dec) | Dattatreya Jayanti | Birth of Lord Dattatreya |
In a year with an adhik (extra) month, one purnima repeats; that is why the count of full moons in a Gregorian year is sometimes thirteen.
The phase decides when the Moon is up. A new moon rises and sets with the Sun and cannot be seen. A waxing crescent is low in the west for an hour or two after sunset - the best time to spot the first thin sliver that marks the new lunar month. At first quarter the Moon rises around noon, is high in the sky at sunset and sets around midnight, which makes it the easiest phase for evening viewing and for seeing craters through binoculars along the shadow line.
A full moon rises in the east as the Sun sets and stays up all night, setting at dawn - the brightest nights of the month, ideal for night walks and treks but poor for stargazing. After full moon the Moon rises later each evening: at last quarter it comes up around midnight and is still high in the morning sky, and the waning crescent is a pre-dawn object rising shortly before the Sun.
Because moonrise moves about fifty minutes later each day, the result gives moonrise and moonset for your own city and date rather than a general rule. On days close to new moon, the Moon may not rise or set at all within the calendar date; the result then shows a dash.
A blue moon is the second full moon within one calendar month. Because a lunar cycle is about 29.5 days, it happens roughly every two to three years - 2026 has a year of thirteen full moons whenever the list above shows two in one month. The Moon does not actually look blue; the name only means "rare".
A supermoon is a full moon that falls near perigee, the Moon's closest point to the Earth. It looks up to about fourteen percent bigger and thirty percent brighter than a full moon at apogee, though the difference is hard to notice without a side-by-side photograph. A micromoon is the opposite, a full moon near apogee.
A lunar eclipse can only happen at full moon and a solar eclipse only at new moon, when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up near the lunar nodes - Rahu and Ketu. For every eclipse of the year and whether it is visible from your city, see the grahan date and time page linked below.
