Mundan, Namkaran, Vehicle and Property Muhurat — Every Date With Its Hour

Mundan, the first haircut, removes the hair a child is born with and is one of the sixteen samskaras. Finding mundan muhurat dates means checking the same three panchang conditions used for every auspicious beginning - an accepted nakshatra, an accepted tithi and a favourable weekday - and then finding the hour when a stable sign is rising over your city.

Age matters as much as the date. The ceremony is held in the first, third or fifth year - odd years only - and the child's own birth month is avoided. Families also avoid holding it while the mother is pregnant. Within those limits, the mundan muhurat dates on this page give every qualifying day of the year with its window.

The nakshatras accepted for mundan are the gentle and fixed ones - Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Punarvasu, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati in most traditions. Tuesday and Saturday are avoided, as are Amavasya, Purnima, Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi.

The first year holds several ceremonies in sequence, and each has its own window counted from the birth itself. Finding namkaran muhurat by date of birth starts with that count: the naming is traditionally on the eleventh or twelfth day, or failing that in the third month.

Because the timing is fixed relative to the birth, the practical approach is to choose the month in the calculator and pick from the qualifying dates inside the right window. Where the eleventh day falls on an unsuitable date, most families move to the twelfth or the next clear day rather than outside the window entirely.

Annaprashan muhurat dates follow the same logic: the sixth month for boys and the fifth or seventh for girls, counted in even months from birth. Karnavedh muhurat options are wider, since the ceremony can be held on the twelfth or sixteenth day or any time in the sixth to eighth month, and it applies to boys and girls alike.

A vehicle purchase muhurat covers two moments: taking delivery and driving the vehicle for the first time. Both should fall inside the auspicious window where possible, which is why families often ask the dealer to schedule delivery for a specific hour rather than a specific day.

The nakshatras favoured for vehicles are the movable and gentle ones - Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Revati and Dhanishta. Ravi Pushya and Guru Pushya, when Pushya falls on a Sunday or Thursday, are considered the best days of the whole year for such a purchase.

A property registration muhurat works the same way, with the registry appointment and the payment ideally inside the window. Fixed nakshatras are preferred here rather than movable ones, since the purpose is permanence: the three Uttaras, Rohini and Dhanishta head the list. Where the registrar's slot cannot be moved, families often complete the paperwork whenever it is offered and hold a short puja at the property inside the window instead.

Each ceremony has a different set of accepted nakshatras, tithis and weekdays, drawn from the muhurta texts. The calculator applies the right set for whichever ceremony you choose, then removes every date inside Kharmas, and finally computes the lagna windows for your city.

Three conditions are common to all of them. Amavasya and Purnima are excluded across the board. Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi - the rikta tithis - are excluded. And the ceremony itself should begin while a fixed or gentle sign is rising, which is what the window in each card gives you.

What the page does not do is check the individual's chart, because for these ceremonies the general muhurat is usually enough. 1. Panchang for every day of the year. Nakshatra and tithi at sunrise are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris in the sidereal zodiac using the Lahiri ayanamsa, along with the weekday.

2. The ceremony's own rules applied. Only dates carrying an accepted nakshatra, tithi and weekday for that specific ceremony survive, and Kharmas dates are removed.

3. Lagna windows for your city. The ascendant is traced through the daylight hours for your latitude and longitude, and the stretches when a suitable sign is rising are given to the minute.

Namkaran. The family gathers on the eleventh or twelfth day. After a Ganesh puja, the father whispers the chosen name into the child's right ear, usually four times, and then announces it aloud. Annaprashan. The child is fed the first solid food, traditionally kheer, by the maternal uncle or the grandfather. A small plate of objects - a book, a coin, a pen, a bit of earth - is sometimes placed before the child afterwards, and whichever is touched first is read playfully as a sign of the life ahead.

Karnavedh. The ears are pierced by a goldsmith or a doctor, with a brief puja before. The right ear is pierced first for boys and the left first for girls in most traditions. Beyond the ritual meaning, the practice has an ayurvedic explanation attached to it in the classical texts.

Mundan. The head is shaved, usually by a barber at a temple or a family deity's shrine, and the hair is offered - into a river, at the temple, or buried. A havan often follows. The child's head is then washed with turmeric water and a paste of sandalwood is applied.

Vehicle and property. A short puja with a coconut, a lemon under the wheel, a swastika on the dashboard or the door, and a first journey or a first entry inside the window. For property, the registry papers and the first payment are timed together where the registrar's schedule allows.

The gap between an ideal muhurat and a practical one is where most families actually operate. A dealer offers delivery on a Tuesday; the registrar gives a slot in the middle of Kharmas; the child's sixth month lands in Chaturmas. The tradition has answers for all of these, and they are less rigid than people fear.

For a vehicle, take delivery whenever the dealer offers and simply do not drive it home - park it, and make the first drive inside a proper window on a clear date. For property, complete the registry when the slot comes and hold the puja and the first entry on an auspicious day afterwards. For a child's ceremony, the windows are wide enough that a suitable date almost always exists somewhere inside them.

Where genuinely nothing works, Abhijit muhurat - the short stretch around solar noon - is the classical fallback, and it is accepted for almost any action. Beyond that, a family priest can weigh a day that fails one softer condition against a strong lagna, which is a judgement that belongs with him and both charts rather than with a calculator.
