Shani Dhaiya: which one, exactly when, and what it is not

Dhaiya - also called the small panoti - is Saturn transiting the 4th or the 8th sign counted from the sign your Moon occupied at birth. Each lasts about two and a half years, and Saturn produces two of them in every cycle of roughly twenty-nine years.

Sade Sati is a different transit. It is Saturn through the 12th, the 1st and the 2nd from the Moon, and it runs about seven and a half years. Different houses. Three times the length. A different reading at every point.

These two get confused more than any other pair in Indian astrology. People are told they are in Sade Sati when they are in dhaiya, quoted seven and a half years when they have two and a half ahead of them, and sold remedies for the wrong transit entirely. This page separates them and shows both side by side.

The two dhaiya are also not the same as each other. Kantak Shani - the 4th - is read for the home, the mother and peace of mind; the name means thorn, not disaster. Ashtama Shani - the 8th - is the one classical writers treat more seriously, and it is read for delay and for matters surfacing that were not planned for. Most pages collapse both into one word.

And the dates. A dhaiya is almost never exactly thirty months, because Saturn goes retrograde for part of most years and re-enters signs it has already left. This page solves every boundary from Saturn's actual motion, to the day.
